Reply:Anything that helps the microorganism spread well from one host to another will help it cause epidemic/pandemics. How well it spreads depends on its mode of transmission, how stable it is outside its host, how severe the symptoms are in the host, etc...
Also, its ability to evolve rapidly would aid it in causing a pandemic. Influenza, for example, develops new strains every year as its genetic material is shuffled in a process called recombination. This prevents hosts from developing immunity.
It also cannot kill its host, at least not quickly. If the host dies too quickly, the organism does not have time to spread to another host.
Those are some of my ideas, I'm sure there are many other characteristics as well.
