2592>When I open the internet, the home page is a porn site and it will not let me click out of it. I am able to go to yahoo but if I click on mail or answers (or anything at all) it just stays the yahoo home page. I looked for Norton or another virus program and apparently the dummy deleted them! Do I need to wipe the hardrive clean? How do I do that? There is nothing on the computer that I need other than the Microsoft Office Suite so I don't mind clearing the whole computer if it will rid me of the virus.
Reply:Computer problems, eh?
Here's my Computer Cleaning list (feel free to print this out):
In order to install security software without any hassles, you'll need to boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and tap the F8 key until a menu appears.
(The F8 key is in a row along the top of your keyboard)
If you have an anti-virus that's broken / not up-to-date you need to uninstall it:
To uninstall a program: Click on "Start", "Control Panel", "Add/Remove Programs"
Still with me? Good!
Download and install the following programs *in safe mode*:
Viruses and spyware tend to go hand in hand:
Anti-virus:
AVG - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/... - This will remove a lot of viruses.
If you're willing to pay money, the best anti-virus is "Kaspersky" - http://www.kaspersky.com/
Anti-spyware:
Spybot Search %26amp; Destroy - http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index....
Make sure to do the "Immunize" part too!
While we're cleaning up your computer, grab:
Ccleaner - http://www.filehippo.com/download_cclean... - it finds the crud in your computer and cleans it out (history files, shortcuts that don't go anywhere, missing file associations, etc).
And everyone needs a firewall. The one with Windows just doesn't cut it anymore.
Zonealarm (free) - http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co...
All of these programs are free, virus and spyware free and highly rated.
Still with me? Awesome!
All of these programs need to scan / update at least once a week. Some you have to start up yourself (spybot s %26amp; d, ccleaner), others will do it automatically (zonealarm, avg).
The last piece of advice I'll give you is to STOP using Internet Explorer - it's letting in viruses and spyware.
Download, install and use Firefox - http://www.getfirefox.com/ - right from the start it's faster, safer, blocks spyware, blocks pop-ups...
With an add-on Adblock Plus - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/ - you'll rarely ever see another ad again.
I know this is a lot to handle, but if you print it out and follow it step by step, you'll be fine.
If you get stuck, let me know (most libraries have internet access if your computer's unusable at the time)
Reply:Download avg and spybot search and destroy. Google "AVG free download" and "spybot s%26amp;d". These may help get rid of the nasties.
It may be easier to start again - in which case you may want to look at openoffice as a free alternative to Microsoft Office.
Reply:You should use Ad-Aware 2007 free and Spybot Search and Destroy and also an antispam software. If it doesn't work remove internet explore from control panel/add or remove programs and add/remove windows components and untick the internet explorer. Of course before installing another browser like Mozilla
Reply:I would wipe out the hard drive and reinstall Windows.
There are programs that are supposed to clean viruses, and fix other problems computers get (like registry errors), but I've never found them to work completely.
Installing Windows is a fairly big job these days because you have to get on the Internet, go to Microsoft's website and download all the upgrades and patches. New Internet Explorer, new Media Player, etc. etc. This can take a whole afternoon. But it's worth it to restore the computer to its pristine, new state.
Right after that, when Windows is all fresh and clean, you can do a backup of the entire disk with a program like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. Then if you ever need to do it again, you can quickly restore the computer to that state, and only have to download the latest changes from Microsoft.
I do this with both of my computers at least every six months. Otherwise they just get worse and worse, slower and slower.
Reply:If it is XP download
AVG 7.5 Antivirus
Lavasoft Adawre
Spybot Search Search %26amp; Destroy
Download all updates
Reboot in SAFE MODE by pressing F8 on start several times.
Run scans with all 3 programs then reboot into normal mode and the nasties should be gone.
Reply:Most likely your problem is spyware not viruses.
Run a number of antispyware programs with updates.
Remove all they find

Here are a couple good programs
Everyone has their favorites. Make sure you do the updates.
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2007/30...
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-De...
http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-Anti...
Stay away from Norton Antivirus
You will be the dummy not your friend if you go out and buy the retail package. It will slow you a crawl , and miss tons of viruses. Meant to reasure nubes , take their money and make a good large target for virus writers to go after .
AVG is fairly good and free.

It is also true , to confirm what another person said , if you take out the spyware some of the time it is like pulling out a cancer. So much damage is done that a lot of times it is best to fully reformat and reinstall windows.
If you need to fdisk a drive you can make a windows 98 boot disk or cd
go www.bootdisk.com
or more severe www.killdisk.com
Reply:use sdelete program from microsoft to wipe all data in the hard drive, then format all drives using format /u,and install a new windows.
get sdelete from here
