Users are infected via a message in MSN Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), or other Instant Messenger program.


The message appears to be from someone they know and contains text similar to "Check this out", "Here are the pictures" or "Whoa....look what I found, click here" directing them to click on a link to view pictures or a website (refer to Figure 1).


When the link is clicked a virus is downloaded and installed on the computer. If you have AIM set-up to automatically download attachments from people on your Buddy List you may get the virus without clicking on the link


Once infected, people on the user's Buddy List will get messages containing the link to the virus that appear to be from the user.


New viruses are spread by Instant Messenger every day. Some allow a remote user to run programs on your computer without your knowledge.

They are the scum of the earth and cause untold damage to important computer such as hospital %26amp; other emergency service computers.

Brousers like Mozilla Firebird (free) can help but "Ad-Aware" AVG Free and Search and Destroy" can have a combined good effect. Virisis are "Mal-Ware and can trash your files, etc.

There are thousands of different kinds of virus that differ in their level of effectiveness and danger to your computer. But the common denominator for most of them is they are designed to spread from one computer to another automatically and without the user knowing.





Once your computer is infected the virus may do many things from assuming control of your computer, to sending out mass email copies of itself to your friends. It may try to delete stuff off your computer or acquire personal information about you and send it back to its creator.





Generally the most common way to get infected is to download an infected file and try to open it. Sometimes they are hidden in email attachments or programs you get off the Internet.





The best thing you can do is be very careful about what you are downloading. Install a good anti-virus program on your computer. Don't buy Norton/Symantec products as they are useless.
